Samuel Eto'o is the Greatest African Footballer According to Benni McCarthy
)
"Since I was from that generation, I will go for none other than Samuel Eto’o from Cameroon," said McCarthy in a recent interview with CGTN.
"I was a young player when I moved to Spain and became friendly with Samuel. And I just think he’s incredible—the story that he’s gone through, to end up playing for Real Madrid and then joining the arch-rivals Barcelona, and then winning the Spanish League and the Champions League in the manner that he did. And then left to go to Inter Milan and did it on that platform," he added.
"I think if you do it in two of the world’s toughest leagues—in Spain and in the Champions League, European competitions—and then you go to Italy and you prove it there, then for me, that’s more than enough."

Greatest African Footballers

McCarthy acknowledged the African football legends who have a strong claim to the title, mentioning the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and George Weah.
"My generation had some outrageous African players. You have Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu. I can never forget my teammate Sunday Oliseh. For me, one of the greatest African players of all time and someone that I learned to love. And I would love to say Sunday, but I don’t think that would do justice to Africa," he noted.
"You had the likes of George Weah, who I could put in there. Abedi Pele from Ghana, you know. But if I have to throw my hat in there for the greatest African player, I think Mo Salah and Sadio Mane come very close to that," he added.
For McCarthy, the legendary career of Eto'o makes him the greatest African footballer among strong contenders like Salah and Mane.
