Harambee Stars Goalkeeper’s Predicament In South Africa To Give Benni McCarthy Selection Headache

The goalkeeper has turned into a bench warmer at his club which could see Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy look elsewhere for future assignments.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno was the man preferred between the sticks by new coach Benni McCarthy but he could soon lose his place in the national team.

Otieno started both matches for Kenya as they fought back to draw 3-3 away to The Gambia before losing 2-1 to Gabon at home last month with some good and not so impressive moments.

It was the first time he was playing since October 2021 and it was seen as a statement from McCarthy that he will be his first-choice goalkeeper after his predecessor Engin Firat preferred Patrick Matasi and Bryne Omondi.

Otieno’s selection might have been down to the fact that he plays in South Africa, where McCarthy and his goalkeeper trainer Moeneeb Josephs come from, and they might have had a closer look at his performances for his club Richards Bay.

The former AFC Leopards and Zesco United goalkeeper joined Richards Bay ahead of this season and walked into the team straightaway, playing seven league games on the bounce as well as three cup matches, between September and November.

However, since the start of December, he has only featured in two games, one in the league and another one in the cup, with Ugandan Salim Magoola preferred.

Otieno had been on the bench for 14 straight league games before he was handed an opportunity against McCarthy’s former team AmaZulu on April 4.

His performances early in the season seem to have convinced McCarthy and Josephs that he was the right man for the two matches in March but his current predicament could see a changing of guard.

McCarthy might have not wanted to start chopping and changing his goalkeepers but if Otieno continues to sit on the bench in South Africa, the tactician could be forced to look elsewhere for future assignments.

The Harambee Stars coach might not need to look far away from South Africa for a replacement given while Otieno’s chances have diminished, Brian Bwire has risen to prominence at Polokwane City.

The former Tusker goalkeeper was on the bench for Harambee Stars against The Gambia and Gabon and having not played for his club until December, he has now featured in all seven matches that he has been available for, as Polokwane City push for a third place finish that would secure CAF Confederation Cup qualification next season.
