Harambee Stars goalkeeper Brian Bwire has picked positives from his first season in South Africa which he hopes can propel him to start more regularly for the national team.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Brian Bwire is just off an impressive debut season in South Africa and he hopes to have done enough to continue being selected for club and country.

The former Tusker FC goalkeeper now plays for South African club Polokwane City which he joined before the start of the just-concluded campaign and after warming the bench in his first few months, he has been handed opportunities in the second part of the season.

Bwire made 12 appearances across all competitions for Polokwane and has become a vital figure in the last three matches of the season, starting all their final eight matches of the season, having won the trust of coach Phuti Mohafe as they finished seventh in the South African top flight.

Overall, he kept five clean sheets and believes his growing stature as a starter at Polokwane shows he is now good enough for an extended spell and much bigger role.

“It has not been easy because going to a new environment with a new team, a new way of doings things, is never easy for a player,” Bwire told Telecomasia.net.

“But, I kept my focus and I keep working hard knowing my chance would come. I am delighted with how things went, getting to play 12 games is not easy.

“I also had a few man of the match awards and overall, I consider my season a success. It is a good platform for me to now go a step higher in the new season,” added the 24-year-old.

Bwire is among the goalkeepers named by Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy for next month’s friendly matches against Chad and with Ian Otieno, another South Africa-based goalkeeper, not in the squad, he will be hoping to be considered between the sticks after playing second fiddle in March.
