The Kenyan international, who had a very good game, would have been seriously injured after a pyro bomb thrown onto the pitch exploded next to him.

Harambee Stars defender Collins Sichenje was lucky enough to escape unhurt  after a "pyro bomb" thrown onto the pitch during Vodvojina’s Serbian Cup final against Red Star Belgrade exploded near him on Wednesday night.

Sichenje, who has been a constant presence in the side’s backline since signing from Swedish outfit AIK last August, was a constant defensive presence that frustrated Red Star attacker Cherif Ndiaye, which must have frustrated a section of Red Star fans, who then launched the bomb onto the pitch.

Fortunately, the defender was able to recover and continued the game. Despite his performance, Vodvojina were unable to prevent that inevitable drubbing to Red Star, who cruised to a 3-0 win.

Red Star cruise to easy win

Red Star took the lead through Bruno Duarte, who scored from a rebound after Sichenje had impressively blocked his initial attempt.

Vojvodina responded with more attacking intent in the second half, but the strategy left them exposed at the back. Sichenje was booked in the 53rd minute for a tackle on Ndiaye in an effort to halt a counterattack.

Vojvodina’s best chance to equalize came in the 66th minute, but Marko Velickovic’s long-range strike clattered the crossbar.

Red Star then sealed the victory with late goals from Felicio Milson and Aleksandar Katai, securing their fourth straight Serbian Cup title.

Sichenje was sent off shortly before the final whistle for a second tackle on Ndiaye. Despite the red card, his performance stood out—he had managed to contain one of Serbian football’s deadliest strikers, Ndiaye, who has scored twice in this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Having missed Kenya’s last squad in March under new coach Benni McCarthy due to injury, Sichenje will now be hopeful of earning a recall for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June, when Harambee Stars host Burundi and Seychelles.
