The Harambee Stars coach has expressed strong confidence that Fred Ambani is capable of guiding AFC Leopards back to league success.

Kenya's national team assistant coach, Anthony 'Modo' Kimani, has expressed strong confidence in AFC Leopards' head coach, Fred Ambani, believing he is the key to ending the club's long wait for a league title.

The Harambee Stars coach’s endorsement came after Fred Ambani guided AFC Leopards, known as Ingwe, to a victory over arch-rivals Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday, December 7. It was their first derby win in over two years.

Speaking to Azam TV after the match, which was decided by a single goal from Julius Masaba, Anthony Kimani highlighted Ambani's unique connection to the club's past successes. As a former player for AFC Leopards from 2013 to 2015, Kimani understands the club's culture well.

Anthony Kimani Backs Fred Ambani to Make a Mark with AFC Leopards

"He [Ambani] is one of those players who won the title with the team back in 1998," the Harambee Stars coach, who also had two stints as interim coach for AFC Leopards in 2019 and 2020, said.

"If there is any manager, any person who understands what the club needs to do to lift another title, then it is undoubtedly him."

Fred Ambani, who took charge in November 2024, has faced criticism from some fans due to the team's inconsistent form.

However, Anthony Kimani believes the derby victory is a clear demonstration of Fred Ambani's capabilities and a response to his doubters.

"If there was anyone who thought it wasn't possible, or had any doubts, then I think today's results, and especially how the team played, have shown that Fred Ambani is ready to push AFC Leopards to the top of the league," Kimani stated.

Anthony Kimani also praised Ambani's tactical decisions during the match, particularly his second-half substitutions, which he described as "spot on."

"Despite playing away, AFC Leopards had more possession, especially in the second half when they had a lead to protect," he explained.

"The players showed confidence, and the substitutions to bring on two midfielders in Kelly Madada and Brian Wanyama were so important in remaining solid, even when Gor Mahia upped the pressure in the last minutes."

The Mashemeji Derby victory propelled AFC Leopards to seventh place in the league standings with 17 points from 10 games, just three points behind leaders Kenya Police.
