Benni McCarthy’s time with Michael Laudrup occurred during the pivotal early years of his career, specifically during his tenure at the iconic Dutch club Ajax.

Joining a club renowned for nurturing young talent, Benni McCarthy was a young player learning the ropes, and the experience of playing alongside a veteran of Laudrup’s stature became an immediate and indispensable footballing education.

The former Manchester United coach highlighted Michael Laudrup’s professionalism, suggesting that his impact extended beyond dazzling moments on the pitch.

For a burgeoning star like the 19-year-old Benni McCarthy, observing Laudrup's daily dedication, training habits, and approach to the game provided a foundational blueprint for what it meant to be a world-class professional.

“I had the honour to play with Michael Laudrup when I was at Ajax, a young player coming through, and you see the professionalism. He was the first ever player to have made the switch from Real Madrid to Barcelona and then back to Real Madrid,” Benni McCarthy said on the Added Time Podcast.

“Never has anything like that even happened, and he was one of those players who made the switch between the two giants of world football. But just the things that he could do with a ball, the vision, the skills and the intelligence.

“Oh wow, I've never seen when you were a 19-year-old kid and you play with somebody like that, like wow. If you don't learn anything in life, then football is not for you. It's not your sport. And yeah, I had the pleasure and honour to play with Michael Laudrup, and he was the greatest player I've played with.”

Benni McCarthy’s admiration for Michael Laudrup highlights how playing alongside a true footballing genius shaped his own approach to the game and left an enduring mark on his career.
