As they prepare for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Harambee Starlets’ build-up will include friendly matches against top African teams.

Harambee Starlets are set for a friendly match against a familiar opponent next month as they intensify their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026).

Kenya is preparing for a return to WAFCON after a 10-year wait, having secured their ticket for the 2026 edition, which will be their second appearance since their debut in 2016.

Beldine Odemba’s charges have their work cut out during the March 17 to April 3 tournament set to be held in Morocco as they will play the opening match against the hosts, who have reached the finals of WAFCON 2022 and 2024.

They are also in the same group with Algeria and Senegal, both WAFCON 2024 quarter-finalists, which calls for proper preparations ahead of the tournament.

Who Will Starlets Play Next?

As part of their build-up to WAFCON 2026, Starlets will play friendly matches against Benin and Ivory Coast, both at the Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium in Abidjan on March 2 and 4 respectively.

“As part of its preparation for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, the National Women’s A team will enter a group starting on February 24 to play two friendly matches against Kenya and Benin,” the Ivorian Football Association had posted on social media on Saturday before Football Kenya Federation confirmed the fixtures on Sunday.

It will be the third meeting between Kenya and Ivory Coast in a little under a year after the two teams clashed in back-to-back friendly matches at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan in April 2025, when the Ivorians won both matches 2-0.

That was part of Kenya’s preparations for their final WAFCON 2026 qualifier against The Gambia, which they won last October, to seal their ticket to the tournament and Odemba’s team will hope to apply lessons that have been learnt since.

Ivory Coast will be a big test for Kenya, who are placed 133 on the FIFA ranking, as they are ranked at position 72 in the world, and are also set to feature at WAFCON where they are in a Group B that has 2022 winners South Africa, Burkina Faso and Tanzania.

The Ivorians are making a return to WAFCON for the first time since 2014 when they finished third. Meanwhile, it will be the first meeting between Kenya and Benin, who are ranked 139, six places below them on the FIFA ranking.

Starlets have been in camp since February 15 with a squad of 34 named by Odemba intensifying their training as they look forward to build-up matches during the international window between February 24 and March 7.
