Gor Mahia are set to lock horns with Shabana at the famous Gusii Stadium in Kisii in what is set to be a historic clash between both sides.

Record FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia will be going for glory in Kisii when they lock horns with Shabana at the famous Gusii Stadium in what is set to be a historic clash.

Both sides have not faced each other at the venue ever since Shabana’s relegation from the topflight in 2006, and are both on fine form heading into the clash.

A win for either side would put them in the driving seat and in a better position in the race for the 2024/2025 FKFPL title.

Shabana are currently fourth on 46 points, six behind league leaders Kenya Police and only four behind Gor Mahia.

A win for them would put them closer to their objectives, while a win for K’Ogalo, who are on 50 points, could see them top the standings by the end of the day especially if Kenya Police fail to win their clash against Kariobangi Sharks and after Tusker failed to get all three points against AFC Leopards on Saturday

Both sides on good form

Shabana have only lost once in their last 13 league games. Peter Okidi's side were controversially knocked out of the FKF Cup by Kakamega Homeboyz, but in the league, they have been almost perfect.

Gor Mahia, on the other hand, have had issues of their own with their technical bench at loggerheads in recent games.

The Green Army drew against Sofapaka before losing to Talanta but recovered to thrash Mara Sugar. They are also through to the FKF Cup semi-finals after they beat Kariobangi Sharks on Thursday.

Before the clash, Gor Mahia coach Sinisa Mihic explained that his charges would leave no stone unturned just to make sure they get all three points in Gusii at the end.

"We will be ready. I already know how they play better than they do. I have watched a lot of games where they shoot from everywhere, including from 40 metres out."

On his side, Okidi said their focus is on winning their matches a game at a time, reminding everyone that they still have to play some of the title contenders.

“Every team should focus on winning their matches according to me. Six matches left right and six points behind but we are yet to play some of the top teams.

“At Shabana, we are taking it a game at a time and we are under no pressure because we are playing our football. Thanks to our fans, we are where we are,” said Okidi.

Security beefed up for the clash

Given the potentially high-risk nature of the clash dubbed ‘Nyanza Derby’, hosts Shabana have already confirmed the seating arrangement of both sets of fans during the game.

“Shabana FC fans have been allocated G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6, G7, G8, and G9 regular stands. Gor Mahia fans have been allocated G10, G11, G12, and G13 regular stands,” the club wrote on social media.

“GSU officers will be stationed in between G9 and G10 to be a buffer between Shabana FC fans and Gor Mahia fans. Shabana FC fans have been assigned the green stripe stand in the VIP, while Gor Mahia fans have been assigned the double red stand.

“The VVIP Pavilion will be shared equally by both teams. Be your brother’s keeper; throwing objects into the field of play is highly prohibited. Maintain law and order,” Shabana added.

Police hope to keep lead intact with Kariobangi Sharks win

In other matches, Kenya Police will be hoping to keep their lead at the top of the table intact with a win over Kariobangi Sharks.

Murang’a Seal will host Nairobi City Stars in what is expected to be a tough battle in Murang’a, with both sides trying to survive relegation. Mara Sugar on the other hand will be hosting Ulinzi Stars at the Awendo Green Stadium.
