The non-nonsense defender was selected as the most impressive player from last week’s round of matches as Gor Mahia secured maximum points against Tusker

Gor Mahia defender Geoffrey Ochieng has been voted the player of the week from matchweek seven in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

Ochieng, popularly known as Simiti, fended off competition from Kariobangi Sharks’ Geoffrey Onyango and Khalid Jumaan of Sofapaka.

The K’Ogalo left-back got more votes after his stellar display as Gor Mahia beat Tusker 1-0 at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

Ochieng was rock solid in defense and did not give the Tusker forwards a sniff at Gor Mahia’s goal.

Famous for his non-nonsense tackles and imposing physical presence, Ochieng made life difficult for his opponents, clearing everything that came his way, to the delight of fans inside the stadium.

He also added an extra threat down the left wing for K’Ogalo with his runs and crosses in the box for the Gor attackers to feed onto.

Benson Omala scored the lone goal early in the first half via a diving header after connecting well with Patrick Sibomana’s cross.

The goal has generated debate due to the positioning of the striker, who was in an offside position when he headed home, but K’Ogalo secured three more points to stay second on the table on 15 points, just one behind leaders Posta Rangers.

It was also Omala’s seventh goal of the season which leaves him top on the scorers’ chart in the FKF Premier League after seven matches.

Gor Mahia will host Bidco United at the same venue in their next match on Saturday.
