Former Wazito coach praises Kenyan international Johnstone Omurwa's journey from midfielder to defender, as he makes his debut for Estrela da Amadora in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Former Wazito FC head coach  Frank Ouna could not contain his pride as he witnessed the impressive debut of Kenyan international Johnstone Omurwa in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Omurwa, who had once been introduced to Ouna as a midfielder, made an indelible mark on the field as he clocked full minutes for Estrela da Amadora, newly promoted to the top flight of Portuguese football.

Ouna's journey with Omurwa began in 2017, when the young talent was a fresh-faced midfielder.

Recognizing Omurwa's formidable build and toughness, Ouna took a gamble and transformed him into a defender and, ultimately, a commanding center back.

This decision proved pivotal, leading to a string of successes that culminated in Omurwa's historic appearance in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

"In 2017 a freshly-faced Omurwa was introduced to me by Harun Shakava as a midfielder. I was then Wazito FC head coach," Ouna tweeted. "I saw his build and toughness, so I converted him to a defender and a center back. The rest is history. Keep going lad. Keep that rugby-like handoff. Well done."

Starting his career shortly after leaving school, he made his mark with Wazito in 2017 before venturing to Mathare United in 2018.

The turning point came when he returned to Wazito in August 2019, a move that paved the way for international recognition.

Trials and setbacks could not deter the youngster spirit. From Angolan outfit Petro Atletico's near transfer in 2020 to South African trials with Bidvest Wits, Omurwa remained committed to his dream.

He eventually returned to Wazito in the Kenyan league, undeterred and more determined than ever.

On the international stage, Omurwa showcased his prowess for Kenya's national U23 team, making his debut in 2018.

These experiences, marked by trials, challenges, and growth, culminated in his awe-inspiring debut for Estrela da Amadora in the prestigious Portuguese Primeira Liga.
