The former Arsenal midfielder was delighted to see Maguire and Onana silence their haters as fans lauded the duo for stepping up to help Manchester United secure a dramatic win

Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil was among those delighted with the performances of Harry Maguire and Andre Onana in Tuesday’s dramatic win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Maguire scored a late header to put United on the cusp of their first victory in the competition this season but Scott McTominay gave away a stoppage-time penalty to leave the Red Devils in a precarious position.

However, Onana stepped up to save Jordan Larsonn’s penalty in what was the last kick of the game to rescue all three points and hand Erik ten Hag’s men their maiden Champions League win this season.

It was moment of pride for the two players as they have endured a lot of criticism with Maguire seeing his playing time reduced before being stripped of the captaincy while Onana has been under the spotlight for a number of high-profile errors since joining the club.

Their performance therefore delighted fans with Ozil happy to see them silence their doubters.

“Harry Maguire and Andre Onana deserve that, silencing their haters,” Ozil posted on X.

Other supporters were also in awe at the two players’ performance.

“Maguire and Onana scoring and saving penalty is just unrealistic,” beamed a fan.

“I've been thinking of how I would face many noisemakers today if we'd lost this game yesterday. I'm so delighted with Onana and Maguire cos [because] they are the most criticised but they stepped up yesterday,” posted another.

“Good morning Kenyans. The rejected stone can be important in building. Yesterday, Maguire and Onana saved us.”

Others feel Maguire has now increased his value and become an asset not a liability for United like before.

“Unpopular opinion, Maguire walks into any big six side,” posted another supporter.

“They used to get so excited whenever they could see Maguire in our games. Now he has become a threat to them. I told you, you ain't ready for the return of Maguire.”

Some fans feel Jordan Sancho who is currently suspended after falling out with Ten Hag needs to learn from Maguire’s mentality and professionalism.

“No toxicity, no bad-mouthing manager, not late to or skipping training, no sulking or whining. Maguire is fully deserving of all the praise coming his way, a great professional,” said a fan.

“Compare the amount of abuse and criticism Maguire has taken and how he’s reacted then look at how Sancho dealt with being called out once.”

United are now third in Group A with three points with Bayern Munich top with nine while Turkish champions Galatasary second on four. Copenhagen have one point from three matches.
