Football Kenya Federation has laid down the roadmap for the highly-awaited elections which are set to be a hotly-contested affair
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has set in motion the process that will lead to the highly-awaited elections.
The federation held a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Saturday which made a number of decisions, key among them the elections, which will not be held early this year as initially thought.
“The NEC kick started the process of the FKF elections 2024, scheduled to be held later in the year, by resolving that the said elections will be conducted using the FKF Electoral Code (2020) which was used in the last FKF elections. This provides consistency and transparency in the electoral process,” said a statement from FKF on Saturday morning.
“The NEC also resolved that the Annual General Meeting which will ratify the FKF Electoral Board and Electoral Code (2020), be held on March 16, 2024, in Nairobi.”
There were hopes that the hotly-contested polls will be held early in the year but the development means candidates are in for a long process.
The Electoral Code and Elections Board were the subject of a major tussle in the 2020 elections when the Sports Disputes Tribunal ordered for a fresh process after nullifying the sub branch and branch elections which had preceded the national polls.
FKF went back to the delegates with a new code and a new board which was passed at a Special General Meeting and they seem keen to avoid another similar scenario.
The federation has come under fire from various candidates for delaying the process by not giving timelines but the latest development will likely raise more debate.
Incumbent Nick Mwendwa, who is serving his second term, has been coy on whether he will seek a fresh mandate following claims that his first term was under the old constitution but there is interest from Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed, former Harambee Stars midfielder McDonald Mariga, Gor Mahia legend Sammy Owino ‘Kempes’, Murang’a Seal CEO Robert Macharia and Gor Mahia secretary General Sam Ocholla.
During the NEC meeting, FKF also passed other resolutions relating to national team events and the budget for 2024.
“Key among the resolutions was the approval of the calendar for all national teams, spanning the senior Harambee Stars, junior sides, and women's teams. This comprehensive calendar will allow for better planning and preparation for key competitions,” added the statement.
“The NEC also approved FKF's competitions Calendar for 2024, covering all of the federation's leagues and competitions, which will provide clarity for clubs and allow them to plan their seasons effectively.
“Members also discussed and adopted the FKF's budget for 2024. The budget will allocate resources towards fulfilling FKF's core objectives of developing football infrastructure, grassroots programs, elite player development, refereeing, and competitions.”
