The Liverpool forward was travelling by road to avoid flying after lung surgery when a tyre blew, causing a fatal Lamborghini crash.

Diogo Jota’s physio has revealed the last moments of the Liverpool star’s life, offering an intimate and heartbreaking account of the hours leading up to the horror crash that killed the Portuguese forward and his younger brother.

Respiratory physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves insisted the 28-year-old was not “partying” before the Lamborghini Huracan he was travelling in burst into flames on a Spanish motorway.

Instead, Jota was determined to recover from a collapsed lung so he could rejoin Liverpool for the upcoming season.

“I said goodbye to him and his brother, Andre, at around 8:30 p.m. His brother was a great companion and decided to go with him, to accompany him on the trip, and that way they would also spend more time together,” Goncalves told Portuguese outlet Record. as first quoted by Daily Mail.

Just five hours later, their £180,000 Lamborghini left the A-52 near Zamora, rolled and exploded into a fireball. Spanish emergency services confirmed the brothers died at the scene.

Twist of Fate: Liverpool Star Avoided Flights Due to Lung Surgery

Goncalves had been treating Jota for a pneumothorax, or collapsed lung, an injury the footballer bravely played through during Portugal’s Nations League triumph over Spain earlier this month.

Doctors advised Jota not to fly due to the risk of complications, prompting him to make the long road trip from Porto to Santander to catch a ferry to Plymouth.

“He made an extraordinary recovery, he was undoubtedly an unparalleled professional. He strictly followed what I told him, as you could see in the way he was recovering,” Goncalves said.

Jota had planned to rest overnight in Burgos before continuing to Santander. Tragically, he never made it.

“The base of his right lung had collapsed a little, but with the post-surgery physiotherapy he was practically flawless. When I left him yesterday he was no longer in pain and was going to return to Liverpool,” Goncalves explained.

“He was excited, confident in his recovery and enthusiastic about the next season. He told me that he would not go on the pre-season tour that Liverpool is going to Japan to strengthen his recovery, he believed he was going to have a great season.”

Not Partying: Physio Slams Speculation Around Final Hours

Rumours quickly circulated online suggesting the footballer had been partying before the crash, something his physio firmly denied.

“I’ve read some things on the internet that are regrettable, and I’ve even heard some in the media. To be clear, Diogo and Andre weren’t partying at all, they weren’t in the so-called ‘good mood’ life, they had nothing that deserved any repair. Nothing,” Goncalves said.

Authorities believe the crash was likely caused by a blown tyre while overtaking another vehicle. Police are still investigating exactly who was behind the wheel.

The tragedy unfolded just days after Jota married his childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso in a Catholic service in Porto attended by family and teammates. The couple shared three children.

Liverpool FC, where Jota was a key part of the Premier League-winning side last season, said the club was “devastated” by the loss.

“Diogo, your family was your world. They were everything,” teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold posted. “For Rute, his children, and his parents, all of our hearts are broken.”

Spanish police continue to examine the wreckage and the final moments before the crash that ended the life of a footballer whose professionalism never wavered, even in his final hours.
