Charlton Athletic coach Nathan Jones had showered praise on Kenyan defender Collins Sichenje following his debut for the club on Saturday.

Sichenje was used from the start during his debut for the English Championship club as they played away to Southampton on Saturday, a game in which they came from behind to draw 1-1, at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Harambee Stars defender was used as a right-wingback as Jones played with a back three and he was impressive on the day, showing his defensive qualities by containing the Southampton attackers.

Jones was thrilled by what he saw from his new recruit, who had been benched for the three matches that his team has played since he signed for the club in January.

“Magnificent, to make his debut away at Southampton. To come into it without playing for a little while – he was wonderful,” Jones told the club’s website. “The supporters were magnificent for me all game. Our fans really warmed my heart today and I thank them for that.”

Sichenje looks to have endeared himself to the fans from the start as they did not just compose a new song for him but also voted overwhelmingly for him as their Man of the Match.

Kenyan Defender Voted Man of The Match

In an online vote which the club conducted on who should be crowned Man of the Match, Charlton had goal scorer Sonny Carey, midfielder Greg Docherty, defender Lloyd Jones and Sichenje but by Sunday morning, the Kenyan had nearly 90 per cent of the vote.

Sichenje had also expressed his delight at how he performed as he looks to do the same on his potential home debut against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.

“It feels amazing to be on the pitch and help the team get a very big point for us so it is a step to keep working and focus on Tuesday’s game,” Sichenje said after the match.

“The game was intense, it was nice, I always believe in my qualities and it was a good opportunity to show and do the right things…the basics.”
