President Yoweri Museveni has hailed the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 as a transformative moment for Uganda and a powerful symbol of regional cooperation.

“CHAN is going to showcase Uganda to the outside world. More foreigners will come to know that the country is a very good destination,” Museveni said, speaking during a national address about the significance of the tournament as quoted by CAF Online.

He noted that CHAN not only provides a platform for African talent but also positions Uganda as a viable and attractive hub for international events.

Museveni acknowledged that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) placed high demands on the host nations, but he welcomed this as a healthy and necessary pressure.

“CAF told us we needed at least three international-standard stadiums. That’s how we opted to build the new Hoima Stadium near the international airport,” he revealed.

This requirement has pushed Uganda to fast-track major sports infrastructure projects, which are expected to benefit the country beyond CHAN 2024.

The president praised these developments for also enhancing regional tourism, trade, and job creation.

President Museveni also spoke passionately about the broader value of sports in society as Unganda, Kenya and Tanzania eye a successfull CHAN and Africa Cup of Nations later in 2027.

“Sports teaches you to persist in body and character. It promotes teamwork and health. It is a form of entertainment, builds fame for the country and helps in promotion of sales,” he explained.

These multifaceted benefits make sports not just a pastime, but a strategic tool for national development.

As Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania prepare to team up again for the 2027 AFCON, CHAN 2024 is being seen as a critical test run for deeper sporting and infrastructural collaboration.
