Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has revealed which team he will be supporting in the CHAN 2024 final between Morocco and Madagascar.

Harambee Stars may have been eliminated from the CHAN 2024 but Kenyans still have a big say in the tournament as the final will be staged in the country.

Harambee Stars fans and players will all be spectators this time after their elimination by Madagascar at the quarter-final last Friday as Morocco and the Malagasy square it off in the final at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

Kenyans, who filled the stadium during Harambee Stars’ matches, have been urged to maintain the same momentum even in the final, and Victor Wanyama has stocked up the fire by picking ‘the enemy’ from the two teams which he wants fans to rally behind.

Why Has Wanyama Picked the North Africans?

“I would want Kenyans to support Morocco in the final because we were denied a clean goal against Madagascar, and I am still hurt,” Wanyama said on Citizen TV, justifying why he wants the North Africans to win.

“When I see Madagascar in the final, I keep thinking this should have been us if our goal had stood. It is part of football, but for me, I will be supporting Morocco in the final.”

Wanyama was among Kenyans who left the stadium disappointed after Benni McCarthy’s men lost to Madagascar on post-match penalties, following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra-time.

Harambee Stars went ahead when Alphonce Omija headed in Boniface Muchiri’s freekick just three minutes after the break and they were celebrating a second goal a couple of minutes later, when Ryan Ogam slotted home, but the goal was chopped off for a foul in the build-up.

Morocco and Madagascar’s Journey to CHAN Final

Kenya would concede a penalty which Madagascar scored from in the 69th minute and held firm to force the shootouts, which they won to book a semi-final date with Sudan, who they beat 1-0 to make it to the final.

They will take on Morocco, who had lost 1-0 to Kenya at the group stage, before they finished second in Group A, and went on to beat Tanzania 1-0 in the last eight and then Senegal on post-match penalties in the semis after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Morocco are two-time winners of the competition, looking for a third title since their last in 2020, while Madagascar, who finished third in 2022, are eyeing their maiden crown.
