Despite a 3-0 defeat to Wydad AC, Nairobi United earned praise from coach Salim Ali for their effort and determination.

Nairobi United coach Salim Ali has lauded his side despite a 3-0 loss to Wydad AC in their CAF Confederation Cup group stage opener at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, on Sunday, November 23.

The Moroccan giants asserted their dominance early, with Ayoub Boucheta finding the net just three minutes into the match, assisted by Thembinkosi Lorch.

The lead was doubled just before the break when Mohamed Bouchouari scored in the 44th minute. Nairobi United struggled to contain the experienced Wydad AC attack throughout the match.

Wydad AC vs Nairobi United: Coach Salim Ali Speaks Out

Speaking after the match, Salim Ali highlighted that Nairobi United was caught off guard by Wydad AC’s opening goal, which disrupted the team’s original game plan.

The coach explained that his side had anticipated a heavy attacking approach from Wydad AC and had prepared to defend resolutely, looking to capitalise on counter-attacking opportunities when they arose.

However, conceding so early forced the team to deviate from their intended strategy, requiring adjustments that ultimately did not play out in their favour.

Salim Ali commended his players for their determination and effort throughout the match, noting that they fought hard to regain control and create scoring chances despite the challenging circumstances.

He acknowledged the frustration of struggling to find the back of the net but emphasised that the experience would serve as a valuable lesson for future games.

“After conceding the first early goal, a lack of concentration distorted our game plan because we had a very good game plan in terms of trying to defend very well, sit back and go out with a counterattack, but after conceding in the early stage then we had to open up our game,” Salim Ali said after the match.

“Of course, considering the other two goals against Wydad for the concentration. I believe our team worked very well in terms of our plan. I can congratulate my players…conceding sometimes football, the only thing is too early to tell the group, we have lost 3 and Azam have lost 2, so we have five other matches to go.”

For Nairobi United, the match was a tough baptism of fire into the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, but they will look to regroup for their match against AS Maniema on Sunday, November 30.
