CAF Champions Leagues: Kenya Police Captain Warns Charges Against Complacency Ahead of Mogadishu Clash

Kenya Police hold a 3-1 advantage heading into the second leg against Mogadishu City FC at Nyayo Stadium next Sunday.

Kenya Police captain David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng has warned his teammates against complacency as they prepare to take on Mogadishu City FC in their second leg clash of the first preliminary round CAF Champions League qualifier next Sunday.

The clash, which will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium next Sunday, will see Police serve as hosts, having been the away side in the first leg, incidentally at the same stadium given Somalia’s lack of CAF-approved stadia.

Speaking to the media during a press conference organised at the venue on Tuesday, Ochieng, who was unavailable during the first leg, believes that the side still has work to do if they are to win and seal a place against Sudan’s Al Hilal, with the eventual winner from the second round sealing himself a place in the group stages

“We have been working on recovery ever since the match, so we have not really resumed training yet. We have a good team and we know that team, and we beat them 3-1, so we want to continue the momentum and get the win,” Ochieng said.

“It is far from over. We have to stay focused because it is never over until the last whistle. We have to be serious and be humble enough that the issue will end on Sunday.

Ochieng, who missed the first leg but is expected to feature this weekend, emphasised that Police are eyeing historic progress to the group stages, a milestone never achieved by a Kenyan club.

“We want to make history by becoming the first team from Kenya to make the group stages. We have to work together as a unit to make sure we fulfil that dream.”

The skipper also appealed for strong home support, pointing out how Mogadishu fans created a vibrant atmosphere during the first leg.

“During the CHAN tournament, fans turned up in large numbers and supported the team. In the first leg, you saw a lot of Mogadishu fans fill up the stadium. We hope Kenyans can turn up in large numbers and support us because we will really need the power of that 12th man.”

The match kicks off at 4:00 PM EAT on Sunday, with the aggregate winner advancing to face Al Hilal for a coveted place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
