Barcelona sign Mendel-Idowu

The English winger left the Blues in the summer of 2023 after his contract with the London club expired and he could not agree to a new deal with the club.

According to transfer speculation, the 18-year-old prodigy will instead sign for Spanish giants Barcelona and will be expected to play with the Barcelona B team under former Blaugrana defender Rafael Marquez.

The forward is regarded as a child prodigy in both football and academics, after making it into both the Chelsea Academy and the King’s Scholar program at Eton College when he was only 13.

Mendel-Idowu’s incredible parental heritage

Mendel-Idowu’s prowess in both spheres of life can be traced to his grandparents, one of whom is ohn Adeleye-Abai, who played for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, with the other being Dr Fola Kayode Mendel-Idowu, who an academic luminary and specialised in bio-aeronautics, becoming Africa's first 'flying doctor'.

The 18-year-old winger has identified former Barcelona winger Neymar as one of his childhood heroes and his admiration for the Brazilian superstar most likely played a role in his final choice of a new club.

Mendel-Idowu who is already signed to Adidas will kick start a new life in Spain with Barcelona hoping to fulfil his immense potential.
