The Gunners have had the naming rights to their 2003/04 'Invincibles' season swiped from under their nose by a former player

The 20th anniversary of Arsenal's historic unbeaten Premier League season in 2003/04 could be missing a key ingredient as the club has encountered a surprising problem regarding their iconic "Invincibles" tag.

Former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who was a key player in the Gunners’ legendary squad, has taken proactive steps to secure the "Invincibles" copyright, meaning the club will require permission from the former Germany international to use the name.

Lehmann’s reasons for securing ‘Invincibles’ branding rights

Lehmann's initiative to secure the "Invincibles" copyright began in 2020, with the process requiring a £30,000 investment. The decision was made without informing Arsenal, catching the club off guard. Explaining his rationale behind the move to secure the Invincibles trademark, Lehmann said, “I had the idea because the name Invincibles becomes more and more popular approaching the 20th anniversary.

"Nobody had it so I was looking into it. I was ready to get the branding rights for our group, so everybody who's using it is violating our brand."

Lehmann’s plans for 'Invincibles' copyright

With ownership of the branding rights secured, Lehmann has ambitious plans for the future. He intends to establish a company backed by his former Invincibles teammates and manager Arsene Wenger. Among the proposed ventures is the organisation of a friendly match between the Invincibles and the Manchester United team from 2004, renewing their fierce rivalry on the pitch.

The former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund star noted, "We have 28 players and 12 staff members, which includes the boss [Wenger]. The company has not been set up yet because we’re preparing.

"If we have income we are going to do something for a charity [related to Arsenal].”

Lehmann will be remembered by Gunners’ fans for his eventful five seasons at the club that included the unbeaten Premier League season in 2003/04 and the run to the Champions League final in 2006.
