FOOTBALL Are Gor Mahia gambling between Omala and Kaddu? McKinstry answers critics

The Kenyan striker was fielded against Bandari as the Ugandan was absent.

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has defended his choice of fielding Patrick Kaddu and Benson Omala interchangeably in recent games.

Before the arrival of Kaddu, Omala was an undisputed starter and had already scored 19 goals. Kaddu came and made a resounding debut by scoring a hat trick against Vihiga Bullets.

Against Bandari, the Ugandan was not in the matchday squad, and McKinstry has revealed he was sidelined by a knock. Omala, meanwhile, scored a brace as K’Ogalo emerged 2-1 winners.

"Patrick Kaddu and Peter Lwasa picked up some knocks last week and have not trained in the last couple of days," McKinstry answered when he was asked whether he is gambling between the two strikers.

"This was an enforced change, but that is why being able to bring in the extra depth in the transfer window was really important because when you do pick up little injuries like that, which are not long-term, we were able to change around."

The former Uganda Cranes head coach also explained whether Omala is more effective when paired up front with Kaddu or when he is a lone striker.

"Everyone just looks at the final scoresheet, but if you see Benson had probably three chances and scored two [against Bandari]," the Irish tactician added.

"In the last game against Sharks, everyone said he was flagged offside, and maybe he was not, and that should have been a goal.

"Again Sofapaka, he hit the post, and the goalkeeper made another good save from him.

"It is not that he has not been creating chances; regardless of whether he is up on his own or has been paired, he has been creating chances.

McKinstry also revealed what he has been telling the former Kisumu Day High School star.

"What we said to him is that he should not stress about it and keep creating chances. If he wasn't creating the chances, that would have been a problem."
