The former Chelsea and Birmingham City star took to Instagram to apologise to the Gunners icon

Eni Aluko, the sister of ex-Super Eagles star Sone Aluko, has issued a heartfelt apology to Ian Wright after facing backlash for suggesting he was "dominating" women’s football coverage and blocking opportunities for female pundits.

The former England star admitted it was wrong to single out Wright during a broader conversation about limited opportunities for women in football media.

Aluko’s original comments spark a heated reaction

In her Woman’s Hour appearance, Aluko, a former England international with 105 caps, was asked directly about the involvement of male pundits, particularly Ian Wright, in women’s football.

Aluko acknowledged Wright’s talents but suggested that, given the limited opportunities for women in football media, his significant presence might inadvertently block pathways for female voices.

The former England international said, "I've worked with Ian a long time and, you know, I think he's a brilliant broadcaster, but I think he's aware of just how much he's doing in the women's game.

Aluko also noted in that interview that in a developing sport like women's football, where opportunities are still relatively scarce, there needs to be a conscious effort to ensure women aren’t sidelined.

While Aluko was careful to note that she didn’t necessarily think it was wrong for Wright to be involved, many felt her comments unfairly targeted a major supporter of the women’s game, prompting Aluko to clarify that the broader point was about systemic access, not a personal attack on Wright.

She praised Wright as a "brilliant broadcaster and role model" whose support for the women’s game had been "significant," and admitted it was wrong to bring his name into the conversation in the way she had. The former Chelsea star acknowledged, "I've known and worked with Ian for many years and have nothing but love and respect for him.”

Aluko stressed that her original aim was to highlight the broader issue of limited opportunities for women in football, not to attack or discredit Wright’s contributions.

She also shared the full Woman’s Hour episode to provide greater context, urging listeners to hear her full comments rather than relying on what she described as "clickbait" headlines.
