Liverpool will have to do without their British-record signing Alexander Isak up to at least March 2026 after he underwent surgery on a fractured leg.

Liverpool's British-record signing, Alexander Isak, is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on a fractured left leg, with his return not expected until the spring of next year.

The club had been preparing for significant time without the striker following an MRI scan on Sunday. The injury occurred during Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday, forcing Isak off the pitch.

While initial fears of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which would have ended his season, were quickly dismissed, the prognosis remained grim. Subsequent scans confirmed a lower leg fracture, and Isak had a successful operation on Monday to repair the bone.

Liverpool has not set a specific timeline for his recovery, emphasizing that the player will not be rushed back. However, the typical recovery period for such an injury is at least 12 weeks, which could see Isak out of action until the international break in March.

Liverpool’s Worst Fears Confirmed

The news is a major setback for the 26-year-old, who moved to Merseyside from Newcastle on transfer deadline day in September for a staggering £125 million. The injury happened shortly after he scored his second Premier League goal for the club, resulting from a heavy challenge by Tottenham's Micky van de Ven. Isak has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool.

Speaking after the match on Saturday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his concern. "We'll have to wait and see," he said. "But if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn't try to come back on the pitch, that's usually not a good thing."

This is the most serious in a series of unfortunate events for Isak since his high-profile transfer. He initially struggled for match fitness and then picked up a groin injury against Eintracht Frankfurt. His goal against Tottenham was seen as a sign that he was finally hitting the form that prompted Liverpool to break the British transfer record.

Isak's absence compounds Liverpool's attacking problems, as they are already without Mohamed Salah, who is on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. This leaves Hugo Ekitike as the only fit senior central striker available to the team.
