Kenya has begun initiatives aimed at preparing the country to stage more 2027 Africa Cup of Nations matches than its co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania.

While distribution of matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has not taken place yet, Kenya is positioning itself to take the lion’s share.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host next year’s tournament with the three countries set to share matches based on a number of key factors.

As witnessed during the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024), the opening match, final and semi-finals were the most sought-after games with Tanzania getting the opener and a semi-final, Uganda hosting another semi and third-place playoff while Kenya staged the final.

This was besides group stage games as well as the quarter-finals. At CHAN 2024, Kenya missed the chance to host more matches after some infrastructure was not ready in time with the games moving to Zanzibar.

However, ahead of AFCON 2027, they want to avoid this by ensuring that not just two stadiums are ready but three that can stage matches during the tournament.

According to Kenya’s AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee chairman Nicholas Musonye, Talanta Stadium and Kasarani will be the main venues in the country but there are plans to improve Nyayo to international standards so that it can stage matches, giving Kenya an opportunity to host more.

“Kasarani is still one of the best stadiums in Africa. We are going to improve on the pitch to get the best standard. During the CHAN final, it had some patches which we are going to work on to make sure we have the best pitch,” Musonye said on Sporty FM.

“We are going to work on the venue control room to make sure that the security systems are in place and many other small things that CAF has given us to do.

“So Kasarani remains one of the best stadiums in Africa and when you add on Talanta, you have two venues that no one can discount that Kenya can do a good competition.

“We are even working on Nyayo to be another venue. We are discussing with CAF that we want to have three venues so that the two big ones can host bigger matches,” added the former CECAFA secretary general.

During CHAN 2024, Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums hosted matches with Harambee Stars playing at the former while the latter staged other Group A games. Nyayo had some of the best attended games with the stadium favoured by fans due to its easy accessibility and proximity to the Nairobi Central Business District.
