The Red Devils star has decided to snub a national team call-up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in order to secure his future at club level

Manchester United’s Tunisian youngster Hannibal Mejbri has taken the bold decision to not participate in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after declaring himself unavailable for the tournament for personal reasons.

This news comes amidst a pivotal moment in Hannibal's career at Manchester United, where he is reportedly nearing a loan move to another club, according to the Carthage Eagles’ head coach, Jalel Kadri.

Hannibal has been on the periphery of the Manchester United team this season and has been involved in nine games for the Red Devils, predominantly as a substitute, scoring one goal.

He is currently in the midst of crucial negotiations regarding his future at the club, with three other teams—Sevilla, Olympique Lyon, and Freiburg—showing interest in securing his services on a short-term loan deal. Manchester United is considering these offers but is also engaged in discussions to extend Mejbri's contract.

Impact of loan move on Hannibal's AFCON participation

The need for immediate integration with a new team is the primary reason why Hannibal has chosen to withdraw from the AFCON tournament.

Playing in the tournament would delay his availability for any of the clubs who wish to sign him in January, which is crucial for him to gain regular first-team experience.

Impact of Hannibal's absence on Tunisia's AFCON preparations

Despite Mejbri's absence, Tunisia's squad for the AFCON features a diverse group of players from various clubs worldwide. They are set to face Namibia in their opening match of the tournament, with stars such as Anis Ben Slimane and Yan Valery showcasing the depth of talent in the team.

Hannibal's decision underscores the complex decisions young players face between national team commitments and their club careers. In Mejbri's case, prioritising his club's future, especially at a time when he is close to securing a loan move, highlights the importance of club commitments in modern football.
