The AFC Leopards defender was named in the 25-man travelling squad by Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy for the upcoming CECAFA assignment in Tanzania ahead of CHAN 2024.

AFC Leopards vice captain Lewis Bandi has explained why it is a huge honour to be part of the squad that will represent Kenya at the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Bandi, who made his debut for Harambee Stars against Chad last June—playing the full 90 minutes as Kenya secured a 2-1 win in Morocco—will be competing for a starting berth at right back with Kenya Police’s Daniel Sakari.

However, his versatility could also see coach Benni McCarthy rely on him as a potential midfield option.

Speaking exclusively to Pulse Sports from the team’s training base in Kasarani before jetting out to Arusha for the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament, Bandi expressed his excitement:

“The mood in camp is fantastic. We are gelling well, and the more we continue training together, the more positive the results will become.”

Bandi has explained why he plans to take the opportunity he has been granted with both hands.

“It is a huge privilege for me because I cannot say I am the best player who could have been called up. There are possibly players in Kenya who are better than me.

“If you get called up—and get the chance to show what you can do—you should take advantage and represent your country well.”

The ambidextrous defender also took time to praise former Man United assistant coach Benni McCarthy.

“It is a huge privilege to be playing under Benni McCarthy. He has gained a lot of experience over the years, which will help us on our journey.”

Kenya's Build-Up to CHAN 2024

In Tanzania, Kenya will face Uganda, Congo Brazzaville, and the hosts in preparation matches ahead of CHAN 2024.

All three games will serve as key tests before the tournament, where Kenya is set to play all its Group A matches at Kasarani Stadium, beginning with a clash against DR Congo on August 4.

Bandi’s journey to captaining AFC Leopards has been one of perseverance and dedication. Born and raised in Hamza, Makadara, he developed his skills in the Makadara Junior League before featuring for local clubs like Hakati FC and Jericho All Stars.

His talent earned him a place in AFC Leopards’ youth team, and by 2020, he had broken into the senior squad, making his debut against KCB FC.

His versatility—being able to play as a left-back, right-back, or midfielder—has made him an indispensable part of the team. Now, as captain, he hopes to guide Ingwe back to glory, having already helped his country achieve success at the upcoming CHAN 2024 tournament.
