The Portuguese found himself on the receiving end of attacks following the defeat.

Gary Neville has slammed Manchester United co-captain Bruno Fernandes as a 'disgrace' after their Premier League heavy defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Although United were fresh from their Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle United and their FA Cup win over West Ham United, they could not stop a Liverpool side that has been struggling.

Consequently, Neville singled out the Red Devils’ skipper for criticism following the 7-0 loss.

"Bruno Fernandes stood in the centre circle with his arms raised, saying, 'Why isn't it me coming off?' Honestly," stated the former United star on The Gary Neville Podcast. "I think some of his behaviour in the second half was a disgrace.

"The second-half was an absolute disgrace, a shambles. They have not been epitomised more than Bruno Fernandes, who was embarrassing - a shambles - in the game."

On his part, Roy Keane said he would go into hiding if he suffered such a loss as a player.

"The senior players at Manchester United, the big players, the ones we give a big build-up to, the experienced players - they are the ones who let the club down today [Sunday]," said Keane.

"I try and imagine: if I had ever been beaten in a big game like this, I would go into hiding as a player. You would. Never mind a few days, a few months!"

United will hope to recover from the Anfield annihilation when they face Real Betis in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 tie on Thursday.

Thereafter, Erik ten Hag's side will host Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday 12 March.
