Cape Town’s Kriol Star Basketball team guard Joel Almeida is set to be feted with the 2025 BAL Ubuntu Trophy.
The event will be held during an on-court ceremony at SunBet Arena before the second semifinal game on Wednesday, June 11.
The Ubuntu Trophy, which recognises the BAL player who has made an outstanding effort and impact in the community during the BAL season, will be awarded to Joel Almeida.

Joel Almeida, with his brother Ivan, have played a pivotal role in shaping Kriol Star Basketball from a local club and foundation into a top club on the continent.
They have helped the team and South Africa at large to qualify for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) for the first time this season.
According to a press statement, Joel Almeida has managed to organise basketball clinics and camps over the past year, reaching over 100 youth and aspiring players.

His team managed to secure a third-place finish in the Sahara Conference with a 3-3 record, and Joel Almeida averaged nine points and three rebounds per game.
Showcasing his consistency on the court, Almeida is also a key member of the Cape Verde Men’s National Team.
Past BAL Ubuntu Trophy winners include Hichem Benayad-Cherif (Groupement Sportif des Pétroliers, Algeria; 2021), Jean-Jacques Nshobozwabyosenumukiza (Rwanda Energy Group Basketball Club; 2022), Tonny Drileba (City Oilers, Uganda; 2023), and Alkaly Ndour (AS Douanes, Senegal; 2024).
