Sifan Hassan is quietly preparing for the London Marathon in Kenya, choosing solitude over training alongside stars like Faith Kipyegon and Eliud Kipchoge.

Sifan Hassan is currently in Kenya, sharpening her talons ahead of reclaiming her London Marathon title on Sunday, April 27.

The Dutchwoman is working with her coach, Tim Rowberry, who terms their training routine as kind of boring, since they only train, eat and sleep, repeating the same routine every day.

However, he admitted that they had an offer to join former world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge and three-time Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon in Kaptagat, but she chose otherwise.

Being a member of the Global Sports Communication, the team that also manages Faith Kipyegon and Eliud Kipchoge, Sifan Hassan had an upper hand to join the iconic Kenyan athletes, but her coach revealed that the reigning Olympic marathon champion prefers working alone.

Tim Rowberry revealed that they stay at Lorna Kiplagat’s training camp, which is close to Iten where they conduct their training. He revealed that before they travelled to Kenya, they trained in the Netherlands for a few weeks.

"We introduced workouts little by little, so like I said, you just try to touch on all the different energy systems, and I'm someone who tries to mix in every type of workout,” Tim Rowberry said in an interview with Floris Gierman.

“Sifan is actually part of the Global Sports Communication and they have their own camp in Kaptagat with Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon, and so, we could have joined them but Sifan is a lone wolf and she likes doing her own stuff.”

Sifan Hassan mostly trains in Ethiopia, but this time around, things were different for the 2023 Chicago Marathon champion.

Tim Rowberry explained that the winter season in Utah, where they primarily train while in the US, was not doing any justice for them, hence the decision to move to Africa.

However, he disclosed that long-distance runners like Conner Mantz train during those harsh conditions and he has been impressive so far.

He explained that they wanted a change of scenery, and Ethiopia was not a choice. Tim Rowberry then revealed that they planned on going to Sierra Nevada, but the weather there was equally unforgiving.

“What happens is, after we do these crazy things each year, she sometimes needs to shut down for a month or two or even 3 months,” Tim Rowberry revealed.

“We are just trying to get her back in shape, and even last year, that was the case. When we went into the Tokyo Marathon, she was completely out of shape.

“Here in Kenya, it's one of those things where you have to adapt to the altitude and the environment first, and in a way, we do it on purpose.”

In true Sifan Hassan fashion, the Olympic champion is carving her own path in Kenya, away from the limelight of Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon.

Sifan is embracing solitude, simplicity, and high-altitude grit as she prepares to reclaim her London Marathon crown.
