Tidy 104 million shillings up for grabs for Hellen Obiri, Evans Chebet & co. in Boston Marathon

Athletes from across the globe will descend on the Boston Marathon course with the hope of having a share of the Ksh 104 million prize purse set aside for the top 10 finishers.

The Boston Marathon, one of the World Marathon Majors offers a lucrative prize money that draws dozens from across the globe to grace the event.

This year’s event is scheduled for Monday, April 15 having attracted star-studded fields in both the men’s and women’s events with defending champions Hellen Obiri and Evans Chebet returning.

Chebet will be hoping to win his third title after bagging back-to-back titles in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the event. After pulling out of last year’s New York City Marathon due to an injury setback, he now returns to the roads ready to stun the world.

On her part, Obiri has started her season well, with a second-place finish at the Houston Half Marathon as she gears up for the return to Boston. She seeks to defend her title and hopefully through her win, get selected in the Kenyan team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Apart from the wins, athletes will be hoping to bag the millions of prize money set aside for the top 10 finishers of the event. For the open division, Ksh 104.8 million has been set aside for the first 10 runners who cross the finish line.

The winners of the race will walk away with about Ksh 19.5 million with a bonus of Ksh 6.5 million for a course record. The athletes who finish second and third will pocket about Ksh 9.7 million and Ksh 5.2 million respectively.

Fourth, fifth, and sixth-place finishers will walk away with Ksh 3.2 million, Ksh 2.3 million, and Ksh 1.7 million respectively. The runners who finish seventh and eight will bag Ksh 1.3 million and Ksh 1.1 million while those who finish ninth and 10th will bag Ksh 910, 630, and Ksh 715,495.
