Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone: There Are So Many Changes

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone spoke about the many adjustments she has been navigating since learning about her pregnancy, emphasising that it has required her to practice patience and show herself kindness, even when it feels challenging.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone also explained that these were discussions she had early on with her husband, as they considered the changes ahead, but she remained clear that becoming a mother has always been a lifelong goal and a central part of her vision for the future.

“But there are just so many changes, and I have to learn to be patient and, you know, have grace with myself, which is something that is a challenge, but a good challenge in many ways. I think there's the honest assessment of oneself, like, you know, what does my career look like post-pregnancy?” Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said on theSkimm's “Well Played” podcast.

“And I think those are conversations my husband and I had early on, of like, what if I'm not the same athlete coming back? What if I'm not as fast? And, you know, I think those are valid questions, especially when that's been my whole life for so long and all I've ever known. But at the end of the day, I've also known my whole life that I want to be a mom, you know?”

When she finally surprised him during a trip to New York, she described his reaction as completely overwhelmed but incredibly heartwarming, leaving a lasting memory of joy and excitement for both of them.

“I mean, it's something we had talked about for years and wanted, and, you know, trying to figure out schedules and careers and all those things, it's something we were super excited to be able to pursue. I found out for like a week before he found out, which afterwards he was like, you knew for a week?” she added.

“I just wanted to blurt it out, but I wanted to do something special. And so, I surprised him one day when he had flown into New York to meet me, and he was just like literally stuck. But it was like the sweetest reaction ever.”

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone also noted that this experience will provide a new type of motivation when she eventually returns to the track, though she admitted she cannot yet imagine the challenges and pressures involved in timing that next phase of her athletic career.

“Nowhere near the intensity or frequency that it once was, but just trying to maintain some level of fitness and normality right in my life throughout the pregnancy. I'm like, there are days where I'm like, I kind of felt fast today,” Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said.

“And so that's like a beautiful opportunity and journey that we're on. And I'm going to cherish that for what it is. And it'll bring a different type of motivation coming back to the track once we make it through this. So I'm like, I just can't even imagine the pressure when it comes to deciding the timing of these things.”
