World 5000m record holder Letesenbet Gidey and newly-crowned world 1500m record holder Faith Kipyegon will go head to head over the 5000m race at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris, France on Friday, June 9.

Kipyegon is in impeccable form and will be keen to maintain the hot streak when she steps foot on the Charléty Stadium. She is just fresh from displaying a quality performance that saw her break Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba’s 1500m world record at the Diamond League Meeting in Florence, Italy.

The two-time world and Olympic champion clocked 3:49.11 to shave 0.96 seconds off Dibaba’s record of 3:50.07. She opened her track season with an impeccable 1500m win at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

She will now be testing herself in the 5000m for the third time. She hasn’t raced in the 25-lap race since 2015. She competed in two races in 2015 and finished second at the Eugene Prefontaine Classic and seventh at the Paris Meeting.

On her part, Gidey will be opening her track season after a disappointing outing at the World Cross-country Championships in February. Gidey came close to winning the senior title at the event before collapsing a few meters to the finish line.

She will be looking for redemption when she takes on the tough field on Friday. Apart from having the 5000m world record, she is also the world half marathon and 10,000m record holder. She will be racing in the French capital for the first time.

Great Britain’s Laura Muir has also been confirmed for the 5000m race in Paris. She opened her outdoor season at the Diamond League Meeting in Florence, Italy, and finished second behind Kipyegon. She will also be looking for a podium finish when she competes in the 5000m race.
