Noah Lyles Reveals Technical Aspect He Shares With Usain Bolt That Makes Him Lethal in 200m

Noah Lyles has shared some key aspects of his 200m techniques that he believes are similar to Usain Bolt’s that have made them dominant over that distance.

Noah Lyles became the first man since Usain Bolt to win four world titles over the 200m race and he believes it is down to a key technical strength.

Lyles clocked 19.52 seconds to win gold over the distance at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, adding onto the titles he had won in 2023, 2022 and 2019.

The American shrugged off stiff competition from compatriot Kenny Bednarek to storm home comfortably while Olympics champion Lestile Tebogo, who had beaten him in Paris last year, missed out on the podium.

Lyles, who had lost his 100m title to Jamaican Oblique Seville earlier at the event, says he finds it easy to win the 200m as it allows him to execute the race better, explaining a technical aspect that makes him superior to his competitors.

“The 100m is different. In the 100m, it is about execution and you might get one chance to adjust it,” Lyles told the Times of India during a recent visit to the country.

Lyles Shares What Makes Him Tough in 200m

“In the 200m, you can make two or three adjustments. The most common one is how I come off the turn. I watch how much energy people use in the first 100m metres if they try to run away from me.

“Often, they do not have enough left for the second half. I also analyse whether they transfer the energy from the first 100m to the second.”

Lyles says this is a technical aspect he has mastered, and believes he is in an exclusive class of athletes who can execute the 200m better, including legendary sprinters Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Johan Blake and Justin Gatlin.

“Very few athletes do that well. Bolt, Justin, Yohan, Tyson. I have seen a little of it in one up and coming athlete, but I won’t name him. I do not want to push pressure on him. I want him to find his own path,” added the Olympics 100m champion, who was India as the ambassador of the Bajaj Pune Marathon.
