Justin Gatlin named his ideal mixed relay team for Team USA, excluding sprint stars Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson.

Former American sprint star Justin Gatlin has stirred conversation after revealing his ideal Team USA mixed relay lineup, noticeably leaving out sprint icons Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson.

The pair are the reigning 100m world champions and are typically seen as automatic picks for any U.S. sprint relay squad.

However, Gatlin, a former Olympic and world champion and key member of America’s 4x100m legacy, offered a detailed rationale for his choices.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Ready Set Go podcast, Gatlin unveiled his preferred quartet for the 4x400m mixed relay, naming Tamari Davis, Gabby Thomas, Erriyon Knighton, and Kenny Bednarek.

"I'm putting Tamari Davis out the hole, to Gabby on the backstretch, to Erriyon Knighton on the curb, to Kenny to bring it home," he explained.

The lineup according to Gatlin, offers more balanced chemistry for the mixed format.

While Lyles and Richardson dominate headlines and bring undeniable firepower to traditional relays, Gatlin’s team selection hinges on more nuanced performance metrics.

Delving into his reasoning, the American sprint legend highlighted the importance of consistent speed transitions and technical compatibility in mixed-gender relays.

"You’ve got to understand the change of speed from a woman to a man," he noted.

"When you get somebody who's too fast to pull away, then it's going to be problematic."

For Gatlin, athletes who accelerate smoothly and maintain rhythm across transitions are more valuable than raw speed alone.

He singled out Knighton’s composure on the curve and Bednarek’s strong finishing capabilities, stating, “Erriyon does a great job of building speed up. He handles the curve very well. And then having someone that we know who can hit it on the fly, that’s Kenny. Right now, Kung Fu Kenny handles that fly.”

Despite this ideal lineup, Team USA will not be contesting the mixed relay at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo this September.

Their qualification hopes were dashed after a baton drop during the World Relays last week, where the team of Kennedy Blackmon, Jada Mowat, Kendal Williams, and Pjai Austin failed to complete the race.
