Benson Kipruto aims to defend his Tokyo Marathon title, break the record, and secure a spot in the World Championships.

Defending champion Benson Kipruto is eager to defend his Tokyo Marathon title as he lines up against a strong field that includes 10,000m world record holder and Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei and a strong Ethiopian cast.

However, with the training he has done, Benson Kipruto believes in his abilities to impress the crowd and fly the country’s flag high just like he did during last year’s edition of the race.

Benson Kipruto stunned the world, beating Eliud Kipchoge and other top runners to take the win in a course record time of 2:02:16. Eliud Kipchoge faded to 10th place and this season, he opted to begin his campaign at the London Marathon.

Now, Benson Kipruto goes back to the streets of Tokyo where he intends to make a mark, and hopefully set another record. His training has been impressive and he remains confident about defending his title.

“I’m so happy to be back here…my condition is good now and I’m ready to run well on Sunday. I’m hoping to improve last year’s time,” Benson Kipruto said in the pre-race press conference.

“My plan is to run a very fast race from the first half and carry on the race. The course is flat which would enable everyone to run a fast time, it’s a great course.”

Benson Kipruto hopes his performance will motivate Athletics Kenya to include him in the team for the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Kipruto was among the athletes who represented the country at the Paris Olympic Games where he finished an impressive third in the marathon. He has expressed interest in representing the country once again.

“The Athletics Federation in Kenya will decide who makes the marathon team to the World Championships and after my race tomorrow, I hope I will be selected. I would like to represent my country again,” Benson Kipruto said.

Aside from the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 and the Tokyo Marathon dominance, Benson Kipruto rounded up his season with a fourth-place finish at the Tata Steel Kolkata World 25K. He took a short break and resumed training in preparation for the long 2025 season.
