American sprint legend Michael Johnson is irked by track and field event organisers for covering great athletes like triple World Champion Noah Lyles with bits of paper.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson has slammed track and field event organisers for ‘disrespecting’ great athletes by covering them with many bits of paper during competing.

The four-time Olympic champion shared a photo of triple World champion Noah Lyles on his X (Twitter) handle as he was competing at the USTAF Bermuda Grand Prix and lamented that he was covered in a lot of papers.

Johnson captioned Lyles’ photo saying: “Why does this sport insist on covering the world's fastest athletes with bits of paper?”

Fans also seemed to agree with the point Johnson was passing across and one commented on his post saying: “It’s the only time they are STATIONARY…get it? I’ll show myself out…”

Another fan added a comment saying: “So many are trying to find alternative ways to place numbering, like the spray painting onto the skin in pro triathlon, when in truth there is no reason for the numbers at all.

“It's not some mass participation fun run (even then it's not needed (see Parkrun). They mean nothing to anyone. A laggard remnant from decades ago.”

Robert Karagezian also added his thoughts and offered a solution to race organisers on how they can avoid bombarding athletes with the bits of paper.

“This is literally what I thought about a couple of days ago, it's so wack. Having a number system for top 10 athletes or more of every event could be the solution. This would be great for the sport and its marketing,” he said.

Jarrin Solomon added another comment saying: “Because it's run by so many older people who haven't realized that technology has moved.

“It's the same production that still doesn't even put up athletes’ social handles on the screen when introducing them, yet that's been standard in entertainment for a decade...”

Jonathan Barker also aired his opinion saying: “We've said this all along in this house, when I ran marathons the number had tech in it, like a chip so you could be tracked. But there’s just no need for a track. Just spray it on at the start with a template, triathletes seem to have it nailed.”
