During last year’s continental event, Moraa was defeated by South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso and was forced to settle for second place.

World 800m bronze medallist Mary Moraa is looking to improve her second-place finish from last year’s Kip Keino Classic competitions when she lines up against a strong field next Saturday, May 13 at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani.

During last year’s continental event, Moraa was defeated by South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso who won with a world lead time of 1:58.41.

However, for this year’s event, Moraa has promised to stun the competitors since she is aware of what awaits her.

“Last year, I wasn’t really keen on who was behind me and I just saw her (Sekgodiso) passing me…it was too late and I couldn’t react.

However, this year I am aware of the strong field and I will not downplay anyone. I just want to win the race, that’s my main goal,” she said.

The Commonwealth Games 800m champion said her training has been going well and she is sure of achieving something good as she gears up for the race.

“So far, so good…my body is responding well. Everything is okay,” she said.

She added that going forward, her main aim is qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest and hopefully finish in the podium bracket.

“I want to compete in Budapest and finish in the podium. I know it’s going to be a big challenge but with hard work, you can achieve anything. Everybody is strong and they will be looking to medal,” she said.

Moraa has been off to a good start after she upset bigwigs at the Botswana Continental Grand Prix to win the 400m and set a new national record of 50.44.

She will be hoping to maintain the hot streak as the track and field season picks the pace.
