Kip Keino Classic: Julius Yego's Woes Continue as He Falls Short on Home Soil

Kenya’s javelin great Julius Yego could not manage a place on the podium on home soil following a disappointing performance at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi.

Kenya’s javelin king Julius Yego improved his season’s best but it was only enough for fifth place at his home meet at Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on Saturday.

Yego was looking for a good outing on home soil but his woes continued when he could not match his competitors in the first event of the day at Ulinzi Complex.

The five-time African champion managed 78.74m to improve from the 78.52m that he managed at the Doha Diamond League early this month but it fell short for a place on the podium.

Who Won the Kip Keino Classic?

Brazilian Mauricio Luiz da Silva won the event after a throw of 86.34m, a personal best, ahead of one of the favourites in German Thomas Rohler, who threw 80.79m, a season’s best, while Leandro Ramos of Portugal managed 80.68m for third place.

Yego was not the only big name who had a bad day at the office, however, as two-time world champion and Olympics bronze medalist Anderson Pieters of Grenada finished seventh with a disappointing throw of 77.49m.

It is a reality check for Yego who is looking to qualify for his seventh World Championships as he needs to hit 85.5m to seal his ticket to Tokyo.
