This marks the second consecutive time the Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medallist will be missing out on the global showpiece.

Former World Half Marathon record holder Kibiwott Kandie has once again been forced to withdraw from the World Championships slated for Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to 27.

This marks the second consecutive time the Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medallist will be missing out on the global showpiece since he also missed last year’s event in Eugene, Oregon.

During last year’s edition of the event, Kandie did not make the cut to the World Championships since he was yet to hit the qualifying time but this time around, he has suffered an injury setback (right leg hamstring injury).

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Kandie disclosed that he does not want to be affected by the issue and he will now shift focus to the World Half Marathon Championships scheduled for October 1 in Riga, Latvia.

“I don’t want this injury to get to my head because it will affect my training. Injuries are normal and I am not the first person to suffer such a setback…I want to focus on the next thing.

"Having missed out on the World Championships, I now want to shift my focus to the World Half Marathon Championships and hopefully, I will be selected in Team Kenya,” said Kandie.

He added that the decision to withdraw was not an easy one to make but he did not want to head to Budapest unprepared.

“When we went for the camp, all was well until after a period of time and I was forced to take a break. At the moment, I’m training but not that intensively because I also don’t want to risk this.

"I made the decision to pull out since I didn’t want to go to Budapest when I know I’m not ready,” he added.

He has since been replaced by Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu who will team up with Nicholas Kimeli and Japan-based Bernard Kibet.

World Cross-country junior champion Ishmael Kipkurui will replace Kandie in the 5000m and he will team up with Jacob Krop, Cornelius Kemboi, and Kimeli who will be doubling.
