Kenya’s desire to host a World Athletics Championships can now gain momentum after World Athletics opened the bidding process for the 2029 and 2031 editions.
Athletics Kenya now has an opportunity to submit their bid to host either the 2029 or 2031 World Championships after World Athletics officially opened the bidding process.
World Athletics made it official on Monday that interested countries can now submit their bids and Kenya, which has expressed an interest to host the 2029 edition, has its chance after missing out on the 2025 event set to be staged in Tokyo, Japan in September.
“Member federations and host institution stakeholders interested in hosting or receiving more information about staging either of these events should consult the World Athletics Championships 2029 and 2031 bid guide and then complete and return the bid pre-qualification form, both available via the World Athletics Library,” World Athletics said through a statement.

Athletics Kenya Already Express Interest in 2029 Worlds
Athletics Kenya had made it clear last year that the country will not miss out on the 2029 opportunity after lack of proper infrastructure hampered their hopes of staging the 2025 edition.
“Our application was accepted and added to the list of countries bidding,” Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei told the media last November while also revealing former Boston Marathon champion Ibrahim Kipkemboi Hussein will lead the team handling Kenya’s bid.
“We didn’t give up and decided to try again. We made a special request to the government, and I thank the CS for facilitating the application,” he added, lauding then Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen for being of great help.
Stadia is among the facilities that let Kenya down and it is a problem yet to be addressed although there is optimism that the ongoing renovation of Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums will see them meet the required standards.
