Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala’s lightning-quick pace thrust him to victory in the ASA Athletics Grand Prix II at a time of 10.05.
Compatriot Samuel Imeta also put up a dazzling performance to finish second in the race at a time of 10.22 at the Germiston Stadium in Germiston, South Africa.

ATHLETICS Omanyala and Wiseman Were plot repeat success at Grand Prix II
Omanyala will be lining up as the fastest in the field with a personal best time of 9.77.
Racing in lane five, Omanyala braved the chilly conditions in Germiston and was in his bullish mood from the onset as he saluted the crowd before settling on the blocks.
Omanyala was quickly off the blocks and opened up a sizable gap in the 60m mark before hitting the afterburners in the final 40m meters to effortlessly cut the tape.
Despite the victory, the sub-10 seconds performance was still elusive for the 27-year-old having promised to break the barrier before the competitions.
Ewsatini’s Sibusiso Matsenjwa finished third in the race at a time of 10.33 with former Africa 100m record holder Akani Simbine sitting out of the race.
Africa’s fastest man was however delighted with his improved times despite not breaking the sub-10 barrier and promised to become the first African to win 100m gold at the World Championships.

“I don’t why the sub-10 is still elusive but we are getting deeper and deeper as we go on and building it up towards the season, we hope we will get it sooner.
We are on course for the World Champs, we are in April and the times are dipping and by the time we get to July we are going to get that medal for Africa in July,” said Omanyala.
Since the inception of the World Championships in 1983 no African has achieved a podium finish in the 100m category with Americans and Jamaicans dominating the distance.

Omanyala also opened up on his tightly packed schedule in the build-up to the Kip Keino Classic that is slated for Saturday 13 May.
“I’ll be there next week (Botswana Golden Grand Prix), then a week later I will be in Atlanta then a week later will be the Kip Keino Classic, these are quality races and we hope for the best,” added Omanyala.
