After days of waiting, Emily Ngii has finally delivered Kenya's first gold medal at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.

African champion Emily Ngii has finally delivered Kenya’s first gold medal at the African games in Accra, Ghana after a hard-fought win at the women's 20-kilometer walk race.

Ngii had her work cut out as she was taking on some of the greatest race walkers in Africa but she was confident of bagging Kenya a gold medal and defending her title successfully. During the previous edition in Rabat, Morocco where she clocked an African record of 1:34:41 on her way to glory.

She clocked 1:37:34 to claim the top prize ahead of Ethiopia’s Teshger Sintayehu who clocked 1:38:07 for a second-place finish. Algeria’s Azz Souad completed the podium in 1:45:42.

Meanwhile, the men’s event saw African 20km race walk champion Samuel Gathimba finishing second in a thrilling event, clocking 1:28:06 to cross the finish line.

Ethiopia’s Wakuma Misgana bagged gold after clocking 1:28:05 whereas Algeria’s Benhammouda Ismail time 1:31:12 to bag bronze.

On Day One of the event, Kenyans managed to win silver and bronze medals thanks to Amos Serem and Simon Koech who finished second and third in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase.

Ethiopian Debisa Firewa clocked 8:24.30 to win with Serem timing 8:25.77 for silver while Kiprop bagged bronze after stopping the clock at 8:26.19. On Day Two, the men’s decathlon saw Edwin Too bag a bronze medal after digging deep for the podium finish.

In the women’s 800m race, Vivian Kiprotich also managed to bag a bronze medal for Team Kenya after finishing behind Ethiopia’s Duguma Gemiecu and Uganda’s Halima Nakaayi.

Evans Kiptum also won the men’s 10,000m bronze medal while the 4x400m mixed relay picked a bronze medal, thanks to the relentless effort of the runners. Winny Bii also made history in the women’s triple jump, winning a silver medal.
