Beatrice Chebet stole the hearts of fans with her resilient run to win her first track race of the season at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Two-time World Cross country champion Beatrice Chebet has kickstarted her track season in great fashion, winning the 5000m in a world leading time at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Chebet was running from the front at the start of the race and did not look back with Uganda’s Loice Chekwemoi controlling the pace for the strong field that included a ton of Ethiopians.

Passing the 2000m mark at the race, Ethiopia’s Melknat Wudu had now climbed up and was running in second place behind Chebet, looking very comfortable and ready to attack.

Another athlete who as also in top contention was Ejgayehu Taye of Ethiopia who was in great form last season and as any other athlete, she was hoping to continue her winning streak this Olympic season.

Passing the 2400m mark, Taye overtook Chebet and was now running in first place, with a group of Ethiopians running behind her as she was the sole Kenyan runner in the lead.

As the athletes passed the 4000m mark, Taye was still in the lead but Chebet was looking very comfortable and ready to dethrone the Ethiopian. As usual, Chebet usually has a finishing kick, a technique that has propelled her to victory in many races.

With the finish line in sight, Chebet, the World 5000m bronze medallist stunned her Ethiopian opponents to take the crown in a world leading time of 14:26.98. Taye finished second in 14:29.26 as Medina Eisa completed the podium in 14:34.11.

Chebet started the season with the cross country, where she was able to win the 80th Elgoibar Juan Muguerza International Cross country before finishing fourth at the National Cross Country Championships which were also used as national trials for World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

She was in a class of her own as she sought to defend her title, which she successfully did, outsmarting her strong compatriots to take the crown in 31:05.

Lilian Kasait and Margaret Chelimo finished second and third in the race with Emmaculate Anyango and Agnes Jebet Ngetich, the 10km world record holder, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
