Kenny Bednarek has been appointed as an international ambassador in India, where he aims to inspire and mentor athletes.

Two-time Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek has been named the International Event Ambassador for the 10th edition of the Tata Steel World 25K, set to take place in Kolkata, India, this Sunday, December 18.

The American sprinter, who secured 200-meter silver medals at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, engaged with students in Kolkata on Wednesday, sharing insights on athletics and physical fitness.

During his visit to the GD Birla Centre for Education, the 27-year-old athlete emphasised the critical role of mental fortitude in sprinting.

"You can be physically prepared and extremely talented, but if you’re not mentally strong on race day, it doesn’t matter," Bednarek stated in a release issued Thursday.

He elaborated that sprinting is "nearly 90 per cent mental," highlighting discipline, belief, and recovery as key components for success.

Kenny Bednarek also discussed his relentless pursuit of improvement. "I’m always learning and pushing myself to get better every year. Even when I win, I ask myself and my team what more can be improved," he explained, adding, "There is no perfection in sport, only progress."

His impressive career includes two Olympic silver medals in the 200m, complemented by world championship silvers in the same event in 2022 and 2025. In 2025, he also claimed a world title as a member of the victorious Team USA 4x100m relay squad.

Commenting on the state of American sprinting, Bednarek expressed confidence in his nation's talent. "American sprinting has always been strong. Usain Bolt was in a category of his own, but right now the USA is looking very good," he said, noting the significance of upcoming major championships and the Olympics being hosted in the United States.

Bednarek also shared an optimistic outlook on Indian athletics. "India has a lot of talent," he told the students. "With the right coaching, training structure and recovery systems, athletes here can achieve great things on the global stage."

He described the Tata Steel World 25K as more than just a competition, calling it a "celebration." "To see tens of thousands of runners, from elite athletes, amateur runners to first-timers, sharing the same road is inspiring," he remarked. "I am looking forward to experiencing race day and supporting the runners on Sunday."

Reflecting on his experience in the country, Bednarek praised its vibrant sports culture. "India’s passion for sport is unmistakable. Whether it’s athletics, football, cricket, or distance running, there is a genuine love for competition and community," he observed.

The sprinter also expressed openness to future collaborations to help foster athletic development in India, suggesting he would be willing to contribute through mentorship or sharing his experiences.
