Akani Simbine believes he's in top shape this season and has sent a strong warning to his rivals with impressive early performances ahead of the World Championships.

Akani Simbine has hinted at being in the form of his life this season as he fired warning shots to his rivals ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The South African sprinter has been on a roll, and he wants to build that momentum, setting himself up for a medal in Tokyo, Japan.

Akani Simbine claimed his first-ever individual medal at a global championship following his bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships.

That set him up for a great outdoor season that has already been witnessed in two of his 100m races so far. He started his 100m campaign at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, clocking a world-leading time of 9.90 seconds.

He is also fresh from securing a dominant win at the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, where he dipped under 10 seconds, clocking 9.99 seconds.

Why was Akani Simbine shocked after his season opener?

Akani Simbine admitted that he was shocked by the time he posted on his outdoor season opener since he had not trained for that.

He revealed that they had only addressed the block starts with the 60m races, and he was unsure of the time he would post.

The Paris Olympic Games 4x100m relay silver medallist revealed that clocking such a time without training should send a message to his rivals.

“For us, the time was very shocking because we had not worked on most of the race yet. It was more of working on the 60s and trying to figure out what running an indoor 60m is like because I’ve never done that,” Akani Simbine said in a pre-race press conference before the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen.

“It came off the work we did from the 60m, but it’s very exciting and it’s encouraging because we worked on something and it has turned out well, and now we have to keep working to keep the rest of the race together.”

After setting the world-leading time, Akani Simbine revealed that he wants to keep getting better and faster, noting that it has always been the goal.

Akani Simbine added that he wants to drop the fastest time at the World Championships and also win a medal, since he believes he is in great shape to do that.

“The plan is always to get faster, the plan is always to make sure that I run faster, you know. We are a group of guys who are always running fast,” Akani Simbine shared.

“To get a medal, you have to run 9.7 seconds, that is the plan, but at the end of the day, it’s about working on what we’re doing and the races we are doing and making sure we are getting faster as the season progresses. I hope that when I run my fastest time, it will be at the champs.”

Now, he shifts focus to the Diamond League Meeting in Shanghai on Saturday where he faces off against strong opposition from Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson, Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala and Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo.
