Chicago Marathon organisers will honour late world record holder Kelvin Kiptum at the 2024 race, marking one year since he set the world record in the US city.
Chicago Marathon organisers will look to honour world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum as they gear up to host the 2024 edition of the marathon on Sunday, October 13.
The event will mark one year since Kelvin Kiptum set the marathon world record when he clocked a stunning 2:00:35, almost dipping under two hours, to completely obliterate the world record of 2:01:09 set by Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022 Berlin marathon.
As per the Canadian Running Magazine, all the athletes and officials will take a moment of silence at the start line to honour Kiptum’s legacy. The fans, athletes and organisers who were inspired by Kelvin Kiptum have also been encouraged to put on the memorial stickers that will be provided at the race expo.

Kelvin Kiptum redefined the art of marathon running and was expected to attempt an under two hours at the NN Rotterdam Marathon in April this year before his untimely demise in February.

The 2023 season was one of the most fruitful seasons for the Kenyan marathon star as he opened his campaign with the London Marathon, running a solo race to claim the win in 2:01:25, the second fastest time in the history, slightly behind Kipchoge’s then world record of 2:01:09.
