The Kericho-born youngster eyes Olympic glory after historic World Championship bronze in steeplechase triumph.

Faith Cherotich, a 19-year-old Form Four student at Kaliyet Secondary School in Kericho County etched her name in the annals of athletics history by clinching the bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.

The event, which took place last weekend, witnessed Cherotich's remarkable feat as she conquered the women's 3,000 meters steeplechase with a personal best time of 9:0.69.

Cherotich's exceptional achievement not only secured her a spot on the world podium but also established her as the first teenager to ascend this particular medal stand in the event's history.

The race unfolded in a breathtaking manner, as Bahrain's Winfred Yavi shadowed the world record holder, Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya, throughout most of the competition.

Yavi eventually surged ahead in the final 400 meters, seizing the gold and crossing the finish line with a world-leading time of 8 minutes and 54.29 seconds – a time that ranks as the fourth fastest in the event's records. Chepkoech, at 32 years old, secured the silver medal with a time of 8 minutes and 58.98 seconds.

Commenting on her remarkable accomplishment, Cherotich expressed her delight and her belief in her potential to excel even further in a recent interview on the Olympics channel:"Nine minutes is a fantastic time. I know I am in shape to go under nine minutes. It is very possible."

The previous year, she clinched the world U20 title, showcasing her dedication and hard work. Cherotich's transition to the senior World Championships was seamless, marked by the same sense of responsibility and pride that she felt during her junior years.

Amidst the celebration of her victory, Cherotich shared her surprise at being the first teenager to secure a medal in the women's steeplechase at the World Championships.

Looking ahead, she eagerly anticipates her next challenge – the Olympics. "Now I am looking forward to being highly prepared for the Olympics," she declared optimistically, underlining her determination to continue striving for excellence.

Cherotich's journey in the world of athletics has been nothing short of inspiring. Prior to her latest victory, she had already amassed two significant world accolades.

Her first breakthrough occurred at the 2021 World U-20 Championships held in Nairobi, where she clinched a bronze medal in the girls' 3000m steeplechase.

In a sport that demands unwavering commitment, Cherotich's rise to prominence serves as a testament to her unrelenting determination and passion for excellence.

Her journey from a junior athlete to a bronze medalist at the World Championships reflects her continuous growth and potential to make even greater strides in the future

As she sets her sights on the upcoming Olympics, Cherotich remains unwavering in her belief that "everything is possible for people who believe in themselves."
