Exactly one year into race walking career Ndangili feels ripe for a coup de grace.
Budding race walker Stephen Ndangili is not resting on his laurels as he plots to dethrone Africa 20km race walk champion Samuel Gathimba.
Ndangili told Pulse Sports that he was tired of living behind the shadow and he is keen on making a name for himself going forward.
The highly ambitious youngster is raring to go after hitting some of his set targets and feels that conquering legendary Gathimba is what has remains.
“I have always finished behind Gathimba, Heristone Wanyonyi, or Dominic Ndigiti since I began my career. I have since accomplished my mission of defeating Wanyonyi and Ndigiti and now I am eyeing Gathimba’s spot,” he revealed.
During the third Athletics Kenya meet at the Thika Stadium, Ndigiti settled for second place in 41:01.20 behind Gathimba who clocked 39:17.60. Ndigiti placed third in 41:10.70.
Since Gathimba and Ndangili are training mates, he believes that comes as an added advantage to his plans.
“We train together and I usually remind him many times that he is the next one. We use the same program to train and I have observed he has the mileage. Going forward, that’s what I will focus on,” he said.
The youngster, who started his career in race walking last year in March, also revealed that he will be keen to make Team Kenya for the Africa Junior Athletics scheduled for April 25-27 in Lusaka, Zambia.
“If I qualify, that will be my first time representing the country. I would also want to bring a medal and most preferably gold,” he said.
