Three-time World Cross-country champion Geoffrey Kamworor will use the senior men’s race at the championships in Bathurst, Australia as build-up for the London Marathon in April.

Kamworor will be debuting at the marathon after having a successful run in three World Major Marathons, including Tokyo, New York City, and Berlin.

He won the 2019 New York City marathon and placed second and third at the 2015 and 2018 editions respectively. At the Berlin marathon, he placed third in both the 2012 and 2013 editions and fourth at the 2014 editions.

He then settled for sixth place at the 2014 Tokyo marathon. The 2015 World 10,000m silver medallist expressed his excitement towards competing at the marathon slated for April 23.

“Yes, this cross-country is part of my preparation for the London marathon. I am very happy to go and compete there,” he said.

Kamworor leads a strong Kenyan contingent to the race with the hope of displaying spectacular results. He said preparations went well and the team is ready to display a good show.

At the 2019 Aarhus World Cross-country championships, Kamworor was edged out to third place by the Ugandan duo of Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo who placed first and second respectively.

He added that he is not under any pressure ahead of the highly contested race.

“I was going there (Aarhus 2019) as the defending champion but unfortunately could not achieve my target. This time round, I am hoping for a good show because I have familiarised myself with the course. This is my fifth time racing in the cross-country…I don’t see any reason to be afraid,” he said.

Kamworor has also battled a bout of injuries but said he is now back on course and ready for the 2023. He narrated how he almost gave up on cross-country after the 2019 outing but refused to give in.

“Cross-country is just in my DNA. I promised myself that I would win a lot of titles especially in this category,” he added.
