AFCON 2025: Hugo Broos Reveals His Favourite as He Plays Down Bafana Bafana Chances

Hugo Broos played down South Africa’s chances while revealing which team he believes are the favourites to win AFCON 2025.

Despite an impressive 20-match unbeaten streak in competitive fixtures and a third-place finish at the last Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa's coach, Hugo Broos, has dismissed suggestions that his team are among the top contenders for the 2025 tournament.

Bafana Bafana are set to begin their Group B qualifying campaign against Angola in Marrakech on Monday.

However, Hugo Broos remains cautious about his side's prospects, even though their last competitive defeat on the pitch was against Mali in the opening game of the 2023 AFCON in January 2024.

AFCON 2025: Hugo Broos on Bafana Bafana’s Chances

"It’s always very dangerous to put yourself as a favourite," Hugo Broos stated on Sunday. "I think this is something that has to be done by the media or by supporters. The only thing I can say is that this AFCON will be tougher than the one in the Ivory Coast."

The Belgian coach believes the continent's traditional powerhouses will be determined to avoid the mistakes of the previous tournament, where many were eliminated earlier than expected.

"And you know why? Because I don’t think that the big countries will make the same mistake they did," he explained.

"As you remember, many big countries were not qualified for the later knockout rounds or were soon out of the tournament. I think of Egypt, I think of Cameroon, I think of Ghana, Morocco, and so on. That will not happen now. I think they learned their lesson."

While unwilling to label his own team as frontrunners, Hugo Broos was clear about who he believes holds that title.

"Normally, all the big teams will be there after the group stages. So that means it will be very tough to win this AFCON," he continued.

"I think if you can call a favourite, it’s Morocco, because they are a very good team and playing at home. For all the rest, it will be a challenge."

Hugo Broos concluded by reiterating his stance: "We will see after the group stages which teams are still there. And then maybe we can change our opinion. But now, for the moment, you will not hear me saying that South Africa is one of the favourites."

South Africa's only AFCON title came when they hosted the tournament in 1996.
